Quick Start Guide: Using the Immersive Reader

The Immersive Reader is designed to help you read and understand your course content in the way that works best for you. Follow these steps to customize your experience:

1. Launch the Tool

Look for the Immersive Reader icon (usually a book with a speaker) at the top of your course page. Click it to enter a distraction-free reading mode.

2. Customize Your View

Click on the Text Preferences (AA) icon in the top right to:

  • Resize Text:
Make the font larger or smaller.
  • Increase Spacing:
Reduce visual clutter between letters and lines.
  • Change Themes:
Switch to a "Dark Mode" or a high-contrast background (like sepia or green) to reduce eye strain.

3. Use the Read-Aloud Feature

Click the Play button at the bottom of the screen.

  • The system will read the text out loud while highlighting each word.
  • Click the Settings (Gear icon) next to the play button to speed up or slow down the voice.

4. Translate & Focus

Click the Reading Preferences (Book icon) to:

  • Translate:
Choose from over 60 languages to translate a single word or the entire document.
  • Line Focus:
Highlight only one, three, or five lines at a time to help you stay focused.
  • Picture Dictionary:
Click on a word to see an illustration and hear its pronunciation.

5. Grammar Tools

Click the Grammar Options icon (wand) to:

  • Break words into syllables.
  • Highlight nouns, verbs, and adjectives in different colors.

Pro Tip:
If you come across a difficult technical term, click the word once to hear it pronounced individually or to see a visual representation in the Picture Dictionary!
